Marisa Mahathey grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, North Carolina, in 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Ceramics. She is currently an artist in residence at MudFire Studio in Decatur, Georgia and works as a ceramic instructor at Chastain Arts Center.
I was introduced to ceramics in college and found that my constantly moving hands were able to achieve an artistic release. I am drawn to the very tactile nature of the medium and enjoy the many processes involved. I prefer to use a white clay body as a canvas for my play with underglazes and glazes. I find I can push a vibrancy of color while still balancing a delicate and feminine nature to the line quality and design I am using to decorate the surface of my pots. I am currently working with mainly functional forms, while expanding to include fanciful elements. Currently my work is exploring a contemporary femininity through the use of forms suggestive of ethereal clouds.
